South Fork #6 Sacramento River, CA, 2009 Image Size: 10 x 7-1/2 inches Inkjet Pigment Print Limited to 25 Prints (Retail Price: $150.00) Specials Price: $100.00 |
Ever since I can remember, I have had a fascination with moving water, especially water flowing over rocks. Even as a little kid of six or seven when I first started fishing for trout on the Mokelumne River near Railroad Flat, California, I have been fascinated with the sights, sounds and smells of rivers, streams and creeks.
For most of my life it has been the added lure of trout fishing that has brought me to the banks of a hundred rivers and streams in the American West. Names like the Merced, McCloud, Sacramento and Stanislaus rivers in California. The Rio Grande in northern New Mexico, the Conejos in Colorado and the Yellowstone, Firehole, Gibbon and Madison in Yellowstone National Park, as well as Henry's Fork of the Snake in nearby Idaho, are all vivid in my memory.
When I started making photographs in the 1950s, I found that I could not function with a fly rod in one hand and a camera in the other. The fishing usually won out. That is why I have only a few photographs of the great rivers I have encountered.
Living in Mt. Shasta for the past nine years I have found that I could fish just about any time I wanted and also make pictures any time I wanted. The upper Sacramento and McCloud rivers are only a few minutes from my house. Sometime in the spring of 2009 I decided to make a project out of photographing these two beautiful rivers.
